Hi, and welcome to our little acre Texel sheep ranch. We have an outstanding group of Texels. Over the past years we have also developed a composite flock, selecting for maternal and growth traits. These ewes, and rams have impressed us with hybrid vigor/heterosis. The Texel originated on the Isle of Texel off the coast of the Netherlands early in the nineteenth century. They became available to U.S. sheep producers in 1990 when they were released from quarantine at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska, where they were evaluated for their potential in crossbred lamb production. The most outstanding characteristic of the Texel is it's remarkable muscle development and leanness. Texel-sired lambs also show an advantage of one full leg score in breed comparisons and less total carcass fat especially seam fat. The Texel has become the dominant terminal-sire breed in Europe. The main objective of the Texel Flock is to improve the quality of the purebred Texel sheep as much as possible, to achieve this goal, the following requirements have to be met: at least two weaned lambs per little rapid growth of young lambs maintaining good maternal characteristics.
Our goal is to produce functional and profitable sheep for the range and commercial sheep producer. However, we also stress profile and thickness allowing our sheep to be competitive in the breeding and market lambs shows. Our breeding program is based on a balanced approach to genetics--selecting for structure, efficiency/Body Condition Score, muscling, capacity, size, and breed character. We are working towards RR flock. We are negative of OPP, and CL. Using only top RR Rams. We are committed to producing high quality, functional, and productive sheep with integrity. Our ranch is located in the little town of Hermiston in Northeast Oregon. |
